The Natinals swept the Seatlle Mariners with a walk-off win Thursday afternoon to push their record to 38-37, one game above .500.
However, immediately following the game the Nats General Manager held an impromptu news conference announcing that manager Jim Riggleman, a product of the metropolitan area, had offered his resignation as a result of his displeasure with ongoing contract negotiations with the team. Mike Rizzo said the team with have a manager in place by Monday.
This news is not altogether stunning. It is actually quite consistent with the management misadventures that have troubled our local professional sports franchises from the Redskins to the Wizards.
Recent reports have emerged that Riggleman is one of the lowest paid managers in major league baseball.
Watching C-SPAN’s Book TV an author mentioned today’s ubiquity of “publicists” throughout multiple industries — entertainment, politics, business, sports, etc. — and, for some reason, I thought that the publicist/Director of Communications/Spokesperson for the self-professed liar that is US Congressman Weiner must have a pretty hard time the past coule weeks.
I mean, come on now, how can you do your job when your boss not only lies to you but lies to the American public. Somehow I felt some pity for his staff, not him. I was interested to see if Rep. Weiner’s official website had press releases that would document his lies. Unfortunately, his website was pretty generic. No mentions of Weiner Gate anywhere. Not even a mention of his leave of absence. Nothing. Not even a mention to confirm or refute reports that he advised a porn star, who he’d been in contact with, to lie about their correspondence.
His bio made no mention, none, of his recent problems. But it did mention, “A true product of New York’s hardworking middle class, Anthony Weiner knows the challenges most families face, and has worked hard to make sure that all New Yorkers get a shot at a good life.”
